Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) and workers’ compensation are two separate programs, so you can receive benefits for both if you qualify. With SSDI, you may be eligible for up to $2,700 per month in disability benefits and health insurance under Medicare.
SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY ELIGIBILITY
Social Security Administration’s process involves six criteria:
- You are out of work or earning less than $1,220 per month.
- Your medical condition(s) prevents you from working and has lasted/is expected to last for 12 months or results in death.
- You medical condition(s) meets the SSA’s requirements for that specific condition.
- You cannot perform the work you’ve done in the past.
- You cannot perform other types of work in the national economy.
- If you are 50 or older, it is easier to receive benefits.

There are four ways to improve your chances of getting benefits:
- Do not wait to file—the SSD process can take months, even years.
- Stay positive and hopeful—70 percent of initial SSD claims are denied.
