Top Halloween Safety Tips to Avoid Injuries

As children venture out in search of candy this Halloween, Pond Lehocky wants to give everyone some tips to stay safe and enjoy the holiday. According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Whether you are walking, driving, or trick-or-treating this Halloween, the following safety tips will help prevent any accidents or injuries.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

On Halloween, families from all over the community make their way door-to-door on foot, hauling pillow cases full of sweets. It is important for you and your children to walk on sidewalks, obey all traffic signals, and use crosswalks when crossing the road. All children under 12 should be accompanied by a parent or supervised by an adult. While you are outside, be aware of your surroundings. Look both ways before crossing any road and do not look at your phone while walking.

Motor Vehicle Safety Tips

Driving around your community on Halloween can be dangerous if you do not take the necessary precautions. As soon as you get into your vehicle, remember to turn your headlights on and pull into driveways or community roads slowly. While you are driving, pay attention for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. Many children’s costumes are dark without reflective tape, it is important to keep your lights on and watch for people in dark clothing. Do not drive after drinking alcohol, and always use a designated driver.

Costume Safety Tips

Getting dressed up is the most exciting part of Halloween. We want to make sure your costumes are spooky, and that you and your family are safe. As it is more difficult for drivers to see after dark, it’s important to add reflective tape to your child’s costume making them visible to motor vehicles. Check that your costumes are non-toxic, flame-resistant, and that nothing is obstructing your child’s view. Having a clear view of their surroundings and wearing slip-resistant shoes will help prevent trips and falls.

From everyone at Pond Lehocky Stern Giordano, we wish you a safe and Happy Halloween! If you have any questions, or should need any legal advice, we will always be here.
